would there be obvious signs if the timing on my truck were off or if the fuel injection were off?

Hi all – this is kind of a follow-up to my last question regarding e85 (85% ethanol fuel) in a non-FFV. Here’s my question: if I put e85 in my non-FFV, and because of that the timing became “off” or the O2 sensor/fuel injection system was not allowing the proper amount of fuel into the system, would I not notice obvious and instant signs of that as I drove along? …signs such as backfires, or chugging, or lurching, or the like? Thanks!

Yes. The computer chip has to have a different timing set to compensate for the different combustion characteristics of the E-85 fuel. The “flex fuel” vehicles have a feature built in that senses they type of fuel, and compensates the computer automatically. A non FFV vehicle doen’t have that feature and has to be upgraded to run right using E-85.

    Hope this helps.

Your vehicles computer can handle about a 40% E85 60% gasoline mix without any problems. Burning the fuel has nothing to do with timing. Your injectors need to add a bit more fuel with ethanol and your vehicle will lean and rich itself out accordingly up to the mic I stated. Anything after and you need a conversion kit
