Why is it illegal in the United States to operate a car on 100% ethanol?

MvL asked:

There are exceptions for off-road vehicles like Indy cars and farm equipment, but it is illegal to operate a regular car with pure ethanol. Ethanol-burning cars need to be running on a certain minimum percentage of gasoline as well as ethanol. This is not the case in several other countries.

So why is it illegal here, with burning ethanol releasing significantly less carbon into the atmosphere than gasoline, and it also being cheaper to produce, and allowing greater independence from foreign oil?

I have not heard of this but if indeed your sources are correct im sure it has to do with lobbyist groups not wanting to loose money from oil profits money talks and can change everything. And just to be devils advocate wouldnt it be hard to determine if the car does run on 100% ethonal.

Because it’s legal for off road vehicles, race cars and such – I would strongly suspect that is has every thing to do with gasoline and E-85 taxes – both federal and state.

It COULD be that 100% ethanol burns invisible, I don’t know if you have watched an Indy car fire, but the fire is invisible, it can be burning you up and you can”t see it. Dangerous stuff there! How could you see a leak and fire if you CAN’T see it? Not sure if it’s Ethanol or not but I’m thinking it is.

Just and FYI ethanol is worse for the environment than gasoline. It takes more energy to create it(via farm trucks and such) than it gives off.
