First let’s stop blaming the liberal for everything, they both screwed up this country.
The ethanol (alcohol) is corrosive and there for can only be used in cars designed for them. So in countries where they use e85, they had to plan by mandating for years to get the new (flex fuel) cars ready, then roll out the e85 fuel.
We can switch to ethanol. However , it is just as expensive as gasoline to manufacture and we dont have enough processing plants yet to handle the demand. It also is raising the price of corn on the market and that it increasing the price of our food (corn is used as feed for cattle and poultry).
Ethanol IS fuel, it’s alcohol made from (mostly) corn. It’s less efficient than gasoline, so the costs are about the same as gasoline if not a bit higher.
A side effect to the ethanol that is being pushed on the public is the rise in price of milk, and beef. The cheaper corn that was used as cattle food is not going to ethanol production, so the cost of feeding cattle has increased, and the increase goes on to the ultimate consumer.

We don’t use ethanol because it takes more gallons of gasoline to produce fewer amounts of ethanol. Quite a while ago in a library book, I read that it takes 120 gallons of gasoline to produce 100 gallons of ethanol. As you can see, it actually takes more gasoline to produce a lesser amount of ethanol. Also, the production of ethanol has been driving up food prices everywhere.
First the cars would have to be re-tuned for the different energy density. Second some parts would have to replaced with stainless steel to deal with the water in ethanol.
Third there just isn’t enough to go around. Last summer saw several farmers plant corn for fuel production instead of wheat for food. As a result the cost of flower has doubled in the last year. Many of the other ethanol sources are still in development.
Ethanol gets less miles per gallon. The cost savings is minimal, if any. The good thing about ethanol is that we can grow it, not just pump it out of the ground.

Pull up to the pump marked ethanol and fill up it works. It is also just as expensive as gas.

Good Luck…
P.S. a Liberal signing off…
