I've heard that those old diesels run much better on bio diesel than the current ones. Suppose that it will be quite difficult to find a Merc Diesel from the 70's that is in a good condition. If you do, you'll be surprised about the pricees asked for these cars. If you buy a cheap one you might be able to run it on bio diesel but you'll have a lot of trouble having it running at all.

Any Mercedes model manufactured during those years with a D at the end is a diesel.

If you're going to run biodiesel, you want to pay attention to the fuel lines because biodiesel will eat through the plastic fuel lines. That's an easy fix by changing the lines to stainless steel. If you do it yourself, it will cost you a couple hundred dollars. That's about all that you have to do to run biodiesel in those cars.

Mercedes typically designates their diesel vehicles with a D and of that era, the was the 240 D, the 300 D, the 300 TD (a turbo-diesel wagon, the 300 SD (a turbo-diesel sedan)

While all of these modeals were quite reliable, the 240 D, though underpowered, was perhaps the most reliable car Mercedes ever made. Watch out though for frame rust on all of these older Mercedes. They were good cars, but some of the older Mercedes had some rust problems.
