I have a Flex Fuel Ford Ranger. Id like to use E85 but do not know the history of the truck?

Could parts have been replaced ( etc) by previous owners that would make it incompatible to run or is this not something that can be changed.

I don’t see why the history should matter at all, except all the power and mileage lost.

The big thing about the e85 setup is that you need a sensor to identify whether or not you are running e85 fuel. The truck probably wouldn’t run without it. To get rid of a sensor like that you would also have to replace the computer which is very expensive. Doubt they did that. Try the e85 fuel and if the truck runs like it is starving for fuel then they may have changed things. When you run e85 fuel the computer has to compensate for the loss of power produced by the fuel. To get the same power out of e85, the injecters have to dispense 37% more fuel into the engine. (1 gal regular gas = 1.37 gallons needed of e85) If your fuel guage moves faster on the e85, now you know the reason why.

It’s major components that usually sets codes if not present… so unless he changed about $1000 worth of parts, it’s e85 compatable.

Easiest way is to put E85 in it and see if the check engine light comes on with a lean code…..

My guess is since it would cost too much to convert it over (including fuel lines,PCM, and sometimes pump) It will still do e85

I really doubt they would have since doing would entail changing out a lot of the sensors plus the engine’s computer. It should be able to handle e85 just fine. Although e85 isn’t as efficient as gasoline so you’ll be using more e85 to run it than gasoline. I think it would use about 1/3 more e85 to travel the same distance than gas used.
