How many gallons of water does it take to produce one gallon of ethanol in the distillation process?

We have heard many conflicting answers to this question. We live in a water stressed area and there is talk of an ethanol production plant to possibly be built in this area. Please help.

E85 SUX. It uses too many fossil fuels to make and seems to be a sub standard fuel.

I can’t find much information on the subject. The information I can find says that they have to be able to prove the plant won’t distrupt water supplies for the area, or they will be shut down at the first sign of problems.

Try searching for “ethanol water issues” or variants of the phrase and see if you can find more than me.
